The tour will start and end in the historic German town of New Braunfels, which is 25 miles NE of San Antonio and 45 miles south of Austin. New Braunfels serves as one of the gateways into the hill country region. The Texas Hill Country is well known in the spring for it’s expansive sea of bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush nestled among the live oaks and prickly pear cactus. We’ll ride through the German Hill Country on the eastern portion, known for large lakes, gorgeous rolling hills with live oaks, and historic German settled towns of New Braunfels, Fredericksburg, and Blanco. The western portion is the River Region, consisting of soft, green canyons, and the Guadalupe and Frio Rivers. You can also enjoy local food favorites such as Tex-Mex, BBQ, German, and sample some Texas wines & biergartens.
Day 1-2: After the first day of orientation and preparing your bikes, we’ll head out on day 2 with a 45 mile day towards Blanco, TX cycling through the quaint town of Gruene (pronounced “green”) where you can eat, antique shop, visit the old fashioned general store, and wine tasting. Then we’ll pedal along the Guadalupe River, Canyon Lake Dam, and hill country ranches.
Day 3-5: We’ll continue on 40 miles to the beautiful German town of Fredericksburg where you can view buffalo and Texas longhorn cattle along the Pedernales River. We’ll spend days 4 & 5 in Fredericksburg as our base and you can do a choice of loops averaging 55 miles:
• Willow City Loop – Texas most famous ride during bluebonnet season
• Enchanted Rock State Natural Area ride
• Sawickis Hill Country Challenge Loop
• Luckenbach, TX, Wildflower Seed Farm, LBJ Ranch
Fredericksburg has many wineries, breweries, shops, and restaurants to enjoy as well as friendly locals and beautiful scenery in and out of town. Take a ride on 4 optional loops viewing hill country ranches, free roaming livestock, live oak, prickly pear cactus, wildlife like whitetail deer, turkey, and armadillos.
Ride to and hike Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, which is home to one of the largest pink granite domes in the country. The Willow City Loop is the most popular Texas ride for viewing the blooming bluebonnets in spring. Many take the opportunity to take family portraits while sitting among a huge sea of blue flowers. You can also take a ride to Luckenbach, TX, population 3, which was made famous by Willie & Waylon, and has the saying “Everybody is somebody in Luckenbach”.
Day 6: We’ll say goodbye to Fredericksburg and head 57 miles to Kerrville, traveling the quiet back roads viewing more hill country ranches and limestone houses settled by the Germans & Mexicans back in the 1800′s.
Don’t eat too big of breakfast, because in 13 miles we’ll be riding by well known Alamo Springs Cafe. Many people travel here to sample their tasty hamburgers, which you can order on a jalepeno-cheese bun. And..before riding off, you can also take a peek at the bat cave nearby, where many people come to watch the bats swarm out of the cave in the evenings for their nightly feeding.
Day 7: 68 miles – Once again ride along the Guadalupe River for a stretch, passing Kerr Wildlife Management Area, ending our day in Leakey, near the Frio River where George Strait sang he learned to swim.
Day 8: 80 miles – Ride along more Texas ranch roads, hitting Bandera about lunch time, which is nicknamed “The Cowboy Capital of the World”. We’ll end the day in Boerne.
Day 9: Our last riding day will be 45 miles back to New Braunfels. If you’re staying over longer, you can enjoy the afternoon shopping and wine tasting in Gruene (pronounced “green”) or downtown New Braunfels. Do some tubing down the Guadalupe or Comal Rivers. World famous Schlitterbahn waterpark (German for “slippery road”) will be open too in the spring if you’d like to enjoy some water rides and an uphill water coaster in a 70 acre, tree shaded park that sits on the Comal River.
