Several years ago, an idea was brainstormed to try and raise money. The crazy idea of riding a push bike from Pakenham to Sale was suggested.

The idea of riding to Sale was so crazy that many people got behind it and said "Ill do that" - and the idea kept going.

In 2003, there were 15 riders who raised $1,600.

After finishing that first ride, Michael Wilson - the guy with the idea - slowly got off his bike, exhausted, pointed at it, and said "That things going on eBay". Strangely enough it didnt end up on eBay and he was back on it soon afterwards, with the Slog to Sale continuing the following years.

Each year, the figures have steadily increased, with $21,500 as the final tally being raised in 2006 with 98 riders.

In 2008 118 riders raised $28,000. And in 2009, 115 riders raised $32,000.

This year, the Slog to Sale officially no longer exists. It is now known as The Slog. The reason for the name change is simply that the ride is now not going to Sale. Instead, it is looping to the South and East of Pakenham through beautiful country landscapes.

We hope to have more riders again, and collect at least $40,000 for the 4Cs Crisis Relief Centre and Emergency Food Bank.

Over the years, weve noticed that many new riders are coming for the day ride, which is wonderful. Were now attracting quite a number of riders who dont think that 150+ kms is silly, but more of a morning warm up. They keep bringing their experience and stories of other events, which encourages us to keep going organising the ride.

Each year we run the event, we learn what ran well and where we can improve for the following year, being ever so thankful of the feedback from surveys taken.

We believe in the mission of helping others and telling about the love of Jesus. Yes, The Slog is organised by a few people from different churches in Pakenham. But dont let that deter you! We invite you to see how normal we really are!

The Bible says in 1 John 3:17 “If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?

The Slog is a great practical way to put something back in to the community and help those in need, and have fun doing it!

The Slog has proudly become one of the biggest fundraisers for the 4Cs Food Bank; having brought in over $125k for it.

No-one on The Slog committee has received, or will receive any payment or donation for organising the ride, as its done out of love for the cause and helping others.

As the organisers of this event, we find this to be one of the most enjoyable days of the year, as it is a day that we all get to ride beside you, chat and enjoy the time on the road. 

Over the years, weve seen an unexpected interest in this great ride.
