3 Peaks Challenge

Sun 11 March 2012
0

The 3 Peaks Challenge provides cyclists with one of the world’s toughest and most picturesque cycling challenges of the Victorian Alps.

Held annually on the Victorian Labour Day long weekend in March, the 3 Peaks Challenge attracts cyclists from around the globe, interstate and Victoria.

The 235km loop provides a course that is so epic it’s comparable to a Tour de France stage with 3 major climbs - Tawonga Gap, Mount Hotham and Falls Creek via Omeo.

Training

Im not sure if I will be able to complete the ride, who is the ride suitable for?

The 3 Peaks Challenge is a 235 kilometer, single day ride with over 4,000 meters of vertical climbing during the day. Riders who take on the challenge need to be in very good physical condition and be able to ride at a minimum average speed of 19 km/h throughout the day in order to complete the ride within the allocate time limit. With the right training program and preparation, anyone can take on the challenge and succeed.

Can I ride half the route only?

We are not offering the 115 km ride option from Falls Creek to Dinner Plain or Dinner Plain to Falls Creek this year. We are encouraging all riders to take on the challenge of the full 235 kilometer ride.

Is there any specific equipment that I need to carry?

There are several items that we require all riders to carry to ensure you are able to deal with the possible weather conditions during the ride and for your physical wellbeing. The list of required items will be updated shortly.

What will the weather conditions likely be on the ride?

Being that the Ride takes place in Alpine conditions; the weather is unpredictable and can change very quickly throughout the day. The average maximum temperatures range between 14.3 on the peaks and 26.7 in the valleys. The average minimum temperatures range between 6.6 on the peaks and 9.0 in the valleys (c/o www.bom.gov.au). Given the unpredictable nature of the Alpine region, be prepared for varying weather conditions throughout the day.

Is there a starting procedure?

Yes there is a starting procedure and facilities put into place to ensure a safe start to the 3 Peaks Challenge for all riders. Riders will be released in a controlled fashion through the start, based on your rider seeding times.

Do I need to be at the start line by a certain time?

Yes, you will need to be at the start line at the correct time to correspond with your allocated starting time. This will help to ensure that all riders can start at a reasonable time and ensure a safe start to the event.

Will I need to have my bike checked off prior to the Ride?

Yes, in order to ensure your safety we will be performing bike checks at the Event Village in Falls Creek prior to the start of the Ride. These checks will be performed
Can I leave the start line whenever I want?

What is the Rider Valet service?

We will be operating on the day a Rider Valet service, which will see you provided with a bag for you to stock up on any essential necessities you may want during a ride. The bags will ‘ride ahead’ of you and be waiting for you at our designated rest stops. We advise participants to not leave anything expensive or valuable in their bags, as Bicycle Network Victoria cannot take responsibility for any losses.
